One House Many Nations

Idle No More’s One House Many Nations initiative to address the dire housing situation on First Nations and other Indigenous communities.

This campaign raises awareness about housing conditions and pressures governments to live up to their Treaty, moral, and legal responsibilities, in addition to providing homes. We are starting a pilot project with the goal of creating a small sustainable village. Sustainable forms of energy such as solar and wind are extremely expensive to access and install especially in non-urban settings. An associated think tank would connect current partners with experts who have the technology and skills to produce small sustainable communities.

Congratulations to OCN and One House Many Nations for winning an Indigenous Homes Innovation Challenge Accelerator award! The award is to continue to develop OHMNs utility core concept that we prototyped with the the Muskrat hut project.

“Natasha Spence from Opaskwayak Cree Nation (Treaty 5 Territory, Manitoba) will receive support to develop the design of a ‘universal utility core’ and a facility to produce it for local homes. The innovative idea of a ‘universal utility core’ would house all heating, ventilation, plumbing and electrical components of homes. Focus area: Energy independence and efficiency.”

After one more work (lot of work) bee… this is how the Muskrat Hut looks right now! We are almost done: the solar charging station, sinks, woodstove, shower, front door, windows frames, rain water filter, utility room – with water storage tank, water heater, battery and insulated box… all installed! All the floor, roof, walls and plumbing are also done! We can’t wait to finish it and see it working! Comment here what you think about the Muskrat so far and leave us a message if you have any questions!! #onehousemanynations #muskrathut #idlenomore #workbee #ocn #opaskwayak #indigenousknowledge #architecture #landdefender #sustainability #woodbuilding #solarpanels #outdoorkitchen

Earthships: A dialogue with Tristan Kennedy

This webinar introduces Earthship Inman Valley, a sustainable, off-grid build on the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia – Kaurna Country. The build is designed in line with Earthship, strawbale, and passive house concepts. It is an autonomous structure which will provide shelter, energy, food and water for occupants. The house is built by owners, instructors, and workshop volunteers using recycled and upcycled materials in a zero-waste approach.

His academic background is in Indigenous Studies and Cultural Studies. This webinar is part of “One House Many Nations: A community first approach to address homelessness amongst First Nation youth” funded by the Making the Shift (MtS) Youth Homelessness Social Innovation Lab.
The project brings together Indigenous youth living on-reserve with lived experiences or those at risk of homelessness with a team of researchers and community practitioners to design and build new homes in their community, thereby gaining new skills, experiences and relationships in the process.
