Racism and Oppression

Many people have been reporting on the racism experienced since the onset of Idle No More activities. In fact, racism has been part of the history of Canada for hundreds of years. Racism in colonial countries is institutional and systemic, and is used to justify an unequal relationship between the colonial government and Indigenous peoples. Colonial systems also affect immigrants of color. Racist justifications include blaming the victim of oppression, and making the practices of oppression invisible. There are many stories or “narratives” which are used to justify inequality, and these oppressive narratives are used repeatedly – they become very familiar and recognizable.
It is very difficult to educate people about racism and inequality, and it is even more difficult on facebook and other social media sites. It is important for people to challenge these narratives and to learn about anti-racist anti-colonial education. Education is the best tool to use against racism and other forms of oppression. As well, if you see websites or posts that are oppressive you should report them immediately. We need to speak out against oppression!! Idle No More!!
